Understanding Volumetric Weight

Volumetric Weight, also known as Dimensional Weight, calculates the space occupied by a package
instead of only considering its actual physical weight. Courier companies use this calculation to determine
the chargeable weight of lightweight but large packages.

Formula

Volumetric Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ Volumetric Divisor
  • Length, Width, Height in cm
  • Volumetric Divisor is usually 5000 for domestic shipments (may vary by courier)

Example

For a package measuring 40 × 30 × 20 cm:

(40 × 30 × 20) ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg

Chargeable Weight

The chargeable weight is generally the higher of the Actual Weight and Volumetric Weight.

Actual Weight 3 kg
Volumetric Weight 4.8 kg
Chargeable Weight (Higher Value) 4.8 kg

HOW IT WORKS

4 simple steps to determine your package chargeable weight

1
Enter package dimensions

Provide the length, width, and height of your package in centimeters.

2
Calculate volumetric weight

Use the formula
(Length × Width × Height ÷ 5000)
to calculate volumetric weight.

3
Compare physical weight

The system compares volumetric weight with actual physical weight.

4
Determine chargeable weight

The higher value between actual and volumetric weight is used for shipping charges.

Note: Volumetric divisor may vary by courier and service type. Common divisor for domestic shipments is 5000.
Fair Pricing

Pay only for the space your package occupies.

Space Optimization

Helps courier companies optimize loading & delivery efficiency.

Transparent Process

Ensures fairness for both shippers and customers.

Accurate Billing

Prevents under-pricing of large and lightweight packages.
